WE’VE GOT ANSWERS.
What is Polka Dot Surf and how does it work?
What’s the tech behind it?
The canvas uses WiFi to connect to internet in order to display forecast information. Our server parses buoy data from various sources and passes it onto the canvas.
While we collect this data from credible sources, the idea of Polka Dot Surf is to show general outlook and approximate wave height for the upcoming week, not serve as precise forecasting tool where we’d suggest Surfline or MagicSeaweed instead.
So how do I actually read these dots?
• Each column represents a day. First column (from left) is today, second – tomorrow, third – day after tomorrow, and so on.
• Number of dots in each column represents the average height of the wave. 4-6 ft waves will show an average of 5 ft for example. Result will always be rounded up to bigger number.
• And color of the light shows waves condition. Red – bad, yellow – OK, green – good, and blue for awesome! Please note, conditions are not available for all spots in which case the dots will be white to show height only. See this page to check which spots have color coding.
The dots show waves up to 6 feet only. What if it’s overhead? Or double overhead?
Currently, the height caps out at 6 feet. We’re working on a Pro version which will include forecasts for 6+ waves.
